What are the goals and objectives of PMSAM?
The goal of PMSAM is to make better the quality and coverage of Antenatal Care (ANC) including tests and counselling services as part of the Reproductive Maternal Neonatal Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCH+A) Strategy. The objectives of the plan are:

- Finding and listing of high risk pregnancies based on birth/ medical history and existing health conditions.
Some of the challenges faced by the PMSMA program are:
- Suring adequate availability of essential drugs, supplies and equipment at the health facilities.
- Ensuring timely referral and transport of high risk cases to higher facilities.
- Making quality assurance and monitoring of the services provided by the volunteers.
- Ensuring effective coordination and convergence among various stakeholders such as health department, private sector, civil society, media etc.
How to identify high risk pregnancies under PMSMA
High risk pregnancies are those type of pregncies in which that they have a higher chance of developing complications or adverse outcomes for the mother or the baby. Some common factors that increase the risk of pregnancy are:
- Age below 18 years or above 35 years
- Previous history of miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm birth, low birth weight, cesarean section, etc.
- Multiple pregnancy (twins, triplets, etc.)
- Pre-existing medical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, kidney disease, thyroid disease, etc.
- Pregnancy-related complications, such as bleeding, infection, preeclampsia, eclampsia, etc
